WWW tomorrow and other goodies!

WWW on Tuesday, January 17 will be at Eleanor Rouse Kootsey's home at 7:00 p.m. Her address is 2822 Floyd Ave., #6 (NE corner of Floyd and Colonial, one block west of Boulevard).

On a somewhat-related note, Britt Van Deusen and I are the chairs of the WomanKind Friday night reception (February 17). We also did it two years ago, and love it - everyone had a wonderful time! It takes a huge effort of volunteers to cook, prepare and serve all of the food necessary to feed the potentially 300+ people that attend!

I know that there has been a barrage of emails recruiting volunteers, and I thank you for your patience in reading and responding (or not responding!!) to them.

Britt and I would like to put out a special plea to the women of WWW to pitch in. We are most in need of women to serve at the actual reception (from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.) as the wonderful hostesses and serving people. We need 12 women to put smiles on their faces and move through the crowd asking our guests "Would you like a stuffed mushroom" while gracefully balancing a tray and a stack of napkins! (among some other tasks, too!)

If you are able to help us, please email me back directly (laurastrickler@gmail.com) and I will get you in the loop and on the list. We would be so grateful!

In addition, if you are a chef and would like to contribute, please let me know and I'll let you know which dishes we still need you to make!

Our last Wine Women & Wonder of 2011 will be tomorrow night at Cheri Stringer's home. Below is a note from her about parking and directions! Look forward to seeing everyone!

Hello Ladies! I'm looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday at my home in the Fan. Our address is 1825 Hanover Ave, and phone number is 804-368-8801. We are two blocks east of Meadow between Granby and Allen, four houses from Granby. Look for the sleigh, and you won't miss us!

Unfortunately parking is always a bit of a challenge in the Fan, especially since we live in the restricted parking area (1 hour parking until 9pm unless a resident). Fortunately, I was able to reserve some street parking for you on Tuesday night. There will be special regulation signs posted in front of our house that say "No Parking After 6 pm Tuesday." The area between these signs is reserved for you. When you come in I'll also give you something to display on your dash. Probably seven or eight cars will fit in this area. Therefore, please carpool if possible to limit the number of cars. If you arrive after this area is full, the following blocks are the closest to my house that do not have parking restrictions. All are approximately 2 blocks away: 2000 block of Hanover, 200 or 300 block of N. Meadow, or the 1900 block of Stuart Ave on the north side of the street bordering Meadow Park.

WWW Retreat - Mark Your Calendars!

We'll be gathering for for our annual WWW retreat on Friday, December 9 at Christine Peterson's house near Charlottesville!

If you've not been before, the retreat is a wonderful event that shouldn't be missed. More details to follow, but the basic plan includes: arriving at Christine's late afternoon/early evening and stay through the next morning at your leisure. We'll have dinner, a study, wine and conversation. Last time, Christine managed to order up snow for a perfect retreat!

As the holiday season approaches, we often reflect on the many blessings in our lives. Many of us will gather with family and friends for delicious meals and cherished time together in our homes.

The St. James's Holiday Gourmet Food Sale is being held November 17-18. The Sale helps the church raise money for Food Force. St. James's Food Force, for those of you who are not familiar with this ministry, is a group of volunteers who prepare food in the church kitchen for homeless and low-income people who attend the Freedom House Conrad Center meal site. This is a very important ministry in our church and for those we serve in our community.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the pick up of Sale items on November 17th from 6:30-8:30, and on November 18th from 9-12. This is an easy volunteer opportunity, with a small time commitment for the impact it could have on a person's life.

Another Note from Ann: Game Night

Hi all!

We are approaching our first ever (I think!) Game Night, which will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 9^thfrom 6-7:30/8ish. Everyone is invited to this, and I want to make it especially friendly to families with younger children.

To that end, I need to collect games that will be friendly for all ages. I have a stock of kid-friendly movies, but none of my own games! If you are willing to share games & when you have a chance, would you take a look at your stock and let me know the name of the game, the ideal number of players, and for which age cohort they’re intended?

I would need to know by Monday, Nov. 7^th- because if I think that I’m short I’ll do a Target run. We’ll take them whenever of course but it would be easier for set-up if I could receive them early-ish (feel free to drop them off that Sunday before or before choir practice, etc.)

Also, I know that some are around for choir- if you are free while children are in rehearsal, I would love some help with set-up that afternoon. Let me know!

Hey everyone!

I’m sorry that I missed WW&W this past Tuesday, and many thanks to Eleanor Rouse for leading the group in my absence! Some of you know this already but we had a clergy retreat up at Shrine Mont and the Bishop really expects us to attend. I missed you all but I was glad to go the retreat.

Before time gets too much later I thought we might start talking about a location for our retreat. The guys are doing their retreat on Dec. 3^rd, and so we decided on the following weekend: Friday, Dec. 9 – Saturday, Dec. 10^th. Christine Petersen has graciously offered to host us at her place in Charlottesville. For those of you who are newer, Christine made it snow the last time it was at her house, which seems to me to be a lovely bonus! Let me know if anyone else would like to offer up a location- we can draw straws if need be, but many thanks to Christine for this offer of hospitality.

For those who don’t know yet, on Saturday, Dec. 10^th at 10 am, the Revs. Carmen Germino and Alex Riffee will be ordained to the Priesthood at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Richmond. I will need to be present for that, and it would be so wonderful if many of you can attend as well, though it’s totally understandable if there are other priorities (like sleeping in at the retreat!) to which you need to attend. I only have the most general idea of the retreat schedule that you’ve followed in the past, and we can talk more about that on Nov. 1^st when we gather at Laura Strickler’s house. I do know that I will need to be onsite at St. Stephen’s no later than 9:30 am, and possibly earlier, depending on whether or not I have a part to play in the liturgy outside of being part of the normal clergy crowd.

Looking forward to seeing you all Sunday and (I hope!) at the Feast on Wednesday the 26^th! As always- feel free to call me or shoot me an e-mail if you have any questions or concerns or if you just want to chat.

WW&W Help at the Feast of St. James's

Hello ladies,

I can not come tonight but I wanted to reach out to WWW for volunteer
help for the upcoming Feast of St. James's! We need volunteers all
day on Wednesday, Oct 26!

We need help decorating and setting up the Science Museum on Wednesday
at 9 am until 12:00. If you can help out during any portion of this
time, we would greatly welcome the help.

Also, we are looking for volunteers to help the evening of the Feast.
Among other tasks, we need more:

-table hosts - you are the host of a table of fellow parishioners,
making sure everyone is happy, has food and wine, etc. You are the
'cruise director' of the table.

-Entrance greeters - We are creating a fun entry into the dinner.
For WWW and other younger members of the church here, I would love
them to help here. You must be able to come at 5:30.

I will select certain sections to study and people are welcome to read and come discuss, or come and discuss and listen. No stress book study is my aim (as parents we all have too much of that anyways).

Hey everyone,

I hope to see you on Tuesday at WW&W. We’re kicking off our study on the parables: no advanced prep required. We’ll probably mostly cover introductory material so there’s no scripture for advanced reading either, but definitely bring your Bibles. J

Also- I wanted to share an update on the Calls.

Alex is scheduled to return home on Monday afternoon. As some of you know, she’s been interacting more this last week or so. She’ll still be receiving care, but she is stable enough that- with some in-home nursing support, and some training that Chris did to work the dialysis machine- they are able to care for her and keep her comfortable at home.

Chris is holding up well and appreciates the visits, and Tim and I did not cross paths this afternoon.

More later about what kind of meal support is (or isn’t) desirable at this point.

Hey, y'all!

I can't thank you enough for the wonderful farewell meeting last Tuesday. I am now safely in New Mexico, sitting at the kitchen counter with sunshine pouring through the windows. I felt surrounded with love last week and your blessings really gave me a sense of peace, faith, and confidence in this new chapter of my life. In Dana's last WW&W (or maybe it was her last sermon....Kendall could probably remember :), she said that it takes a village to raise a child and then went on to say that she felt St. James's & WW&W ladies, especially, were the village that helped shape her as a priest. I feel that you all have been my village to help me become a woman. I feel like most of my 20s were spent wearing training wheels. I played it safe with a regular 9-5 job after college, and then decided I needed to do my thing & go to massage school. And you all cheered me on. And after school, when I was barely making any money with a new practice, my mom was close by to help and, while I appreciated it, I couldn't help feeling like a child. But now I feel like I am a grown up. Sounds silly. Many of you had children by the time you were my age and I'm sure that makes you feel grown up real fast! But for me, something always felt a little girlish about my life and I feel like I am finally a grown up. And you all have, again, cheered me along the way. I have learned from all of you, and want to thank you for your prayers, for your listening and your open hearts.

I will miss you so much but will do my best to keep in touch and hope that you will, too! I'm serious about some skyping, too.

Hi everyone -

Below is a note from Chris Call. Let's please keep Alex and their whole family, at the top of our minds and in our prayers, as they go through this very difficult time.

Alex is shaking for the first time today and this evening her dialysis is slowing down. Knowing that I hadn't reported the new shakes throughout the day and understanding that dialysis is Alex's lifeline, I called the doctors just now. They came, the dialysis had a good cycle in front of us, and then I understood easily that the doctor was reasonable yesterday when she told me we would have her weeks or just days, and no longer months.

Alex shook held her two rattles high in the air, rattling them, with big blue open eyes, awake more today and yesterday than we have seen in weeks. I have a special song for Alex now and it goes "Rattle, Rattle, Rattle!" -- it used to be "Dance Dance Dance".

Another note from Chris Call about Alex

Thank you so much for bringing god and baby Jesus closer to alex, Tim, Colin and I. Your generosity, comfort and thoughtfulness help us living with the sadness and lonliness.

You also fortunately give is something to do, either later on or for breaks from hospital time maybe. This is tremendous.

The flowers brightened up alexs room so much and we are so appreciative. It is hard for the nurses to work with Alex with her sweetness and her prognosis and so I went through the vase carefully this am and tried to leave them the good flowers that were still beautiful. Thank you.

Alex and I are on our way to mcv ICU via ambulance eta 3 pm today.

Thankful that she is generally not in pain that medicine can not help these past few days.

Loving her strength and courage to continue on and travel to Richmond to share herself and her lessons of life and living peace with us and you.

Alex also has managed to amazingly look now like she is stepping out of a CHOP ICU beauty spa for these special days. Miraculously, today she has the pinkest cheeks and the least swelling I have ever seen on her. Behind her for now are the days of regular blood transfusions and high blood pressure from swelling.

Hello beautiful people,

Alex sweatly holds hands (this is wonderful), watches us, moves her head slowly following us, snores:), sleeps peacefully when she has pain medicine on board, appreciates soft voices and noises, and likes low light. She is a beautiful person and she is blessed with the life that we all also are blessed with.   I believe I saw her smile a few days ago when I entered her room and approached her.

The results of her MRI were horrible, showing significant infultration of the disease into her brain causing significant loss of brain mass. She will be taken from us at any moment/day now by a medical problem of any sort, such as a seizure, infection or aspiration.   She is too weak to fend much off now.   She is in a bit of pain; her pain medicines fortunately continue to be effective although they have sedative effects. There may be a point where we have to be in a position to make a decision.

Alex is quite a hero.   She shows us all how to endure pain and suffering with dignity and without complaint.   She contributes significantly to science being in studies and taking an experimental drug. We have arranged for tissue specimens from all of her organs to contribute to scientific study when the time comes.   She has taught all of us who are touched by her, including many people around richmond and the country, that life is to be treasured and health is to be protected.   She demonstrates to all to smile and be happy even when life is not perfect at all.

Go out please and be happy.   Smile. Love.   Be good.   Do good. Embrace life and everyone around us. Alex has showed me this message to pass on to you.

I am going to do all that I can to get Alex alive and back to Richmond MCV this week so that Tim can also spend a few hours with her each day that we are blessed with her and others can spend time with her also. We are told that if anyone must see her before she passes, that must be done now, just for reference.

If we are lucky to have her come to Richmond alive, anyone is welcome to visit her at any time.   I may or may not be answering phones and messages a lot - and wont' be coordinating -over the next few days but I am wanting to - so please just visit or do whatever you would like even if you do not reach us. Either Tim or myself will be with Alex at MCV on the 7th floor at all times until she passes away.

Please know that we all very appreciative of you, your love and suppport.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, Aug. 9^th. We’re continuing to look at Lectionary readings for the following Sunday as we move through the summer, and this Tuesday we’ll look at Matthew 15: (10-20), 21-28, in particular that last section of the text. This is an intriguing scene where Jesus loses an argument to a Canaanite woman. No advanced reading is required.

Some things to think about in the coming weeks, as you savor the last days of summer!

On August 23^rd we will have a farewell party for Morgan Colonna, who leaves us to join her beloved Thomas in Santa Fe, New Mexico. If I were really smooth I would have orchestrated a surprise party- but we can still keep the details and theme a secret! I’ll be working on that in the next few days. Please call or send me an e-mail at anndieterle@doers.org if you have any ideas. Keep in mind that we don’t want to trash Louise’s house in the process. More to follow.

We’ll begin our official ‘Fall’ season on Tuesday, September 20^th. We’ll start out with a study on the parables. I’m going to use the book The Parables for Today by Alyce McKenzie as a guide, though you won’t need the book to follow along. When we met last time there was some interest in doing a Fall Kick-Off retreat, in addition to an Advent Retreat. I love both of these ideas for different reasons- The Advent retreat because it’s a good chance to get away for spiritual and emotional rest at a really crazy time. I like the idea of a Fall retreat because there’s been a transition in our group with Whitney leaving, and my travel schedule- mostly set before I knew of Whitney’s departure- has me feeling more absent than present in these last few months. A retreat is always a good way to ‘re-up.’ What do you think? If there is enough interest, we’ll figure out the timing and location.

Our next Wine Women & Wonder will be on Tuesday, July 19 at Katie Morris' home. The reading (advance prep not required, but you certainly may!) will be Romans 8:26-39.

A Volunteer Opportunity

The note below comes from Ingrid, a woman who works at Peter Paul Development Center (and also babysits the Acey clan). If you are interested in helping out on what looks like a very worthwhile project, please contact Ingrid - her information is at the bottom of the note.

Two months ago, I was approached by the Director of Curriculum at the Peter Paul Development Center (where I currently teach 4th grade), about a potential teaching opportunity specific to Mosby Court. Mosby Court is one of the many low-income housing projects located in Richmond’s East End. And here I was, being asked to lead the whole thing as Teacher. Talk about enlarging territory!

This opportunity involves educating 12 incoming second-graders who live directly in Mosby Court over the course of eight weeks, M-F, 9-3, during the summer. These students will spend each day of the program developing their reading and math skills, growing spiritually through daily Bible lessons, and experiencing life through gardening, exercise, field trips and more.

Since April I have been planning what this summer will look like for me, an assistant and these 12 little ones. I am now forging full-speed ahead, full of excitement for what this summer will hold.

Here’s where you come in. Because this is a brand new program there are huge needs. These needs fall into FOUR categories:

8 Weekly Volunteers. We will need 8 individuals to donate their time over the course of one week during the program. The hours will be: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9-12. 3 hours, 4 days, for one week. No teaching/classroom experience needed. Volunteers will work with individuals and small groups. (*Perfect for a teacher who is “off” for the summer, a college/grad student, or anyone who has some extra free time!)

The weeks are:

June 27-June 30 (no Friday this week)

July 5-July 8 (no Monday this week)

July 11- July 15

July 18- July 22

July 25-July 29

Aug.1-Aug.5

Aug.8-Aug.12

Aug.15-Aug. 19

8 Individuals or Groups to Donate Lunches. I have the responsibility of coordinating donated lunches for each day of the program. I am looking for individuals or groups of people (Bible studies, community groups, families, co-workers, etc.) who would be willing to make and deliver lunches each day for 12 students for one week.

*If an individual or group would like to donate $75 for the cost of lunches versus making them, that would be entertained, but not the first choice.

Supplies. This program will take place in a renovated apartment that is currently used as a health screening facility. We will need to transform this space into a place of learning and exploration. Therefore we are in need of :

Educational supplies: Books, book shelves, flash cards, math games, games in general, etc.

Garden supplies: we will be gardening on site with two raised beds and are in need of small hand shovels, gloves, potting soil, plants, flowers, herbs, watering cans, stakes, anything used to garden.

Art supplies: crayons, markers, construction paper, scissors, craft supplies, glue, tissue paper, stickers, tape, etc.

One-Time Volunteers. We will be in need of individuals who love to read aloud to serve as a Mystery Reader, people who have musical abilities to share their talents, people who love to garden to help out with our garden, etc. If you have a talent/ability (which we all do), please come and share yours with us!

If any of this excites you and you think “I can do that!”, please partner with me in this awesome opportunity. Specifically, our largest needs are for 8 Weekly Volunteers and for Weekly Lunches. If you know which week you are able to volunteer or donate lunches, please e-mail as soon as possible and I will reserve those dates for you.

Please prayerfully consider how you may be involved with The Mosby Summer Program. Also, if you know of someone who may want to be a part of this opportunity please forward this on to them.

Six months ago I could not have anticipated what praying one specific prayer each day would do. But God knew. I am amazed by what God is doing and it only further confirms for me what He will do with eight weeks and 12 young lives in Mosby Court.

Easter Family?

Hello, Ladies,
Remember how we raised money to buy gifts for our Christmas Angel family and ended up with some change to spare after purchasing their presents? I have a Hello Kitty wallet at my house holding a more-than-trifle wad that needs a designated purpose. In December we talked about sponsoring the same family at Easter and buying gifts for the children. I haven't contacted the family for several reasons, the first being that our group hasn't discussed how we want to proceed, and the other reasons we can discuss in our next meeting, this Tuesday, Apr 5th.

Here's the thing, if we are to have an Easter drive, we need a volunteer to head it. I am going to be abroad over Easter, and can't take the reigns on this leg of our project. The funds have been raised, and I have a few Eastery things to donate, so--provided we proceed to sponsor this same family--we would need to contact them again, purchase add'l gifts if they are receptive, wrap, and deliver. If one of you is listening for a calling (plug for the Every Member's Ministry campaign) please consider heading this project, whatever shape it takes after our Tuesday meeting.

And likewise, if you have thoughts about said shape, let's hear 'em on Tuesday, eh?

** For those of you who might've missed Carrie's email, please see below for an important message about CARITAS.

As most of you know, CARITAS is coming up quickly (starts next Saturday!) and in the past we have taken an evening as a group to do some entertaining and visiting for our guests. A few of us were brainstorming and came up with the idea of doing a Karaoke night. I think the guys would have a ball with this, and our own Dancing Queen Stevie Toepke can get her hands on a Karaoke machine. What I need to know is how many people might be interested in joining in for this.

Friday the 25th of February, from 7:30 to about 9:30 ( or later if everyone is having a good time). I know it may be the only time some of you've done Karaoke without having a few drinks before hand, but it could make it all the more amusing! :) If you could please let me know if you are interested as soon as possible, I will put it on the schedule if we have at least a handful of women. Lessons & Angels

Okay, ladies: this concludes the first chapter of our Operation Outreach Christmas Angel Project (OOCAP). Here's a brief update of what we have accomplished prior to delivery for those of you who were unable to make WW&W at Clare's on Tuesday:

We raised around $1000 including the $860 cash donations & additional gifts donated (estimated between $130-140).
Each of the 4 children received a new winter coat, a pair of pants, a shirt, and 2 items from their wish list (one larger; one smaller), for a total of 5 gifts.
For all children to share: 3 sleds--2 saucers & 1 big enough for 2 children.
For dad: a fleece pullover, a pair of pants, a sweater, & a $25 gas card.
For mom: a new pair of jeans, a ruffled top & sweater, and a gift certificate for a massage with me.
For the family: dinner for last night and food to stock their pantry & fridge and help them through a snowy Christmas....about $100 worth of food.

Tuesday we wrapped gifts at WWW (see some pictures below!) On Wednesday, Emily and I delivered the beautifully and lovingly wrapped presents to the family at their home. First, I went to the grocery store and picked up dinner for 9 and lots of additional food for their pantry.

As some of you know, last week during a phone conversation I had with the dad, I learned that 3 additional children--all teenage boys and sons of the dad's from another marriage--are unexpectedly staying with them over the holidays; yes, that makes for a total of 7 children: 4 teenage boys, 1 teenage girl, a 5 yr-old boy and a 3 yr-old girl. I asked if they would like food considering they have these extra mouths to feed, and they said that they wouldn't turn it down.

So with 3 roasted chickens, about $100 worth of groceries, and enough presents for a family of 6 crammed into my Honda, I met Emily at a Target close to their house and crammed her into my chicken-scented car, under the stuff on the front seat and over the stuff on the floor. Packed with a carload of Christmas cheer and food, we sped off to find their house and pulled up to a festively decorated abode that clearly housed a full family: parked in front of the sedan in the driveway was a tidy line up of toy trucks & 2 small riding toys fit for a toddler, next to which was definitely a flower pot full of matchbox cars (which, I have to admit, would make a really cute centerpiece for a child's birthday party, and yes, you can use that.)

We were immediately welcomed by the dad, who was outside with 3 of the teenage sons, to whom he promptly introduced us and to whom we promptly handed bags of food to carry inside so that we could figure out where to sneak the gifts. Since the gifts were wrapped and numerous, I think our plan of hiding them in the trunk of the car while the boys were inside soon fell by the way side, because even sooner the boys were back outside ready to unload more; so the dad gave instructions to the oldest boy to keep the others upstairs. The boy obliged and ducked off into the house while we cleared out my car of gifts and headed inside ourselves under the watchful eyes of children peering through curtains of a 2nd floor window.

Inside, the house was warm and festive: in the dining room was a tree with a litter of presents around it [We later learned these gifts were all from the dollar store; I estimate they had maybe 25 gifts, so the price of all of those was about what we paid for one coat....which means that basically none of the children would have gotten a new coat or an item from their list without our gifts. (And I noticed that none of the boys who greeted us outside were wearing coats and this was after sunset, so it was definitely cold....my point: I think they could use the coats, for sure!)] Em and I deposited gifts by the tree and went to the kitchen to meet the mom, who had been doing dishes and making a fresh pot of coffee, which she graciously offered us. The four of us stood around for awhile and talked.

After maybe 10 minutes, Emily--standing in the doorway to the kitchen--must have heard the scurrying of little feet or felt a warm body behind her because she turned around to find the 5-yr old boy curiously standing about looking at us (but more so at the new pile of gifts, I suspect); the parents invited him in and introduced us. He could not have been cuter and friendlier. He was all squirmy with excitement as we talked about Christmas approaching and proudly announced that he had already taken care of his letter to Santa and so had his little sister. What he didn't announce was that he had also already unwrapped 2 of his gifts (not from us, but from his parents); his parents told us that this is the first Christmas that he can recognize his name, so he didn't waste any time and found 2 presents marked for him under the tree and had at it with them. The older sister has since removed the tags from his presents! The little boy left to watch TV while we visited a little longer with the parents.

The dad loves to talk and share stories: about how he grew up in St. James's and was even married there in 1992, about how grateful they are for our help, and about the children. Occasionally he would say something like "my other child," (referring to his 2 children who live out of state) and it became confusing to follow because he clearly has children from other marriages and so does she; the mom and dad actually don't biologically have any children together.

So I asked, "Okay, so set me straight: which children are yours and which are hers?" The dad started to reply and then stopped himself and said, "Well, I love them all like they are mine. We don't really think of them in that way." To that point, we learned that only this year the dad was granted custody of his 3 yr-old little girl. When speaking of the custody battle, he gestured toward the mom and said, "We wouldn't have the baby girl if it wasn't for her," and the mom sheepishly smiled and shrugged. The dad added that having the little girl with the family is their greatest Christmas gift, to which the mom nodded in agreement. Clearly this is a family full of love that transcends boundaries of yours and mine.

After a little more visiting and sharing, we mentioned that we would need to head out and Emily expressed that she needed to get home to her boys. The mom smiled and excitedly asked how many children Emily had and their ages. Em replied and the mom said, "Well, if you ever need clothes, [the 5 yr old] is growing like a weed and we have plenty of hand me-downs."

Emily thanked her and I thought to myself what a narrow mind I have: this whole time I have been imagining what this family will look like, what we will talk about, if they will like the presents we give them, etc,--granted this project has pretty much been the defining element of my Christmas season and I have been exposed to the generosity you all have shown toward the family--but at no point did I ever imagine they would have us in for coffee or offer us clothes for our families. I only imagined experiencing their joy and gratitude (which sounds pretty selfish and self-fulfilling now that I see it in writing) and of course I expect to experience my own humility for failing to recognize the gifts of my own life, but never did I imagine experiencing their generosity.

Why hasn't this possibility occurred to me? Maybe because I think that I have more resources than they do? After all, I have electricity and I have plenty of coats and for different occasions, for pete's sake. But this is a very yours/mine attitude and I don't tend to think of myself as being that cornered. If someone asked me for my coat, I would give it to them. I don't really hold on to things if I see someone else needs it more. The reason I think that I never imagined experiencing their generosity is likely due to how I respond to times of financial stress. When I am in a crunch the fear takes over and I tend to cut back my generosity. I don't give as much to the church, and I don't give as much time to others. Time = money, right? I try to make money in my spare time and worry about making ends meet instead of embracing the people around me and the things I do have (like electricity and tons of coats. I feel like a real heel writing this.) I also know that I over-prepare food when I know have people coming over because the fear of not having enough for everyone is constantly lurking around my back. This family doesn't seem to have that fear. The parents said they are so excited to have those 3 boys in for Christmas because they will all be together. My first thought was "how are they going to feed everyone?!"

Times of financial stress can lead to bickering and selfishness out of a fear of not having what we need (or think we need). So many people become divided during these times and when they experience the "tightening of their belt," it can often lead to a tightening of the heart. And I am completely guilty of this as I thought "how will they feed all of those children?" I saw in this family that a struggle to make ends meet doesn't seem to interfere with their ability to love and care for each other. Remember: they didn't ask for our gifts. We asked them if we could "help them out." The mom and dad might be tired and frustrated about losing jobs and taking pay cuts, but I never once heard them mention these things or anything else negative. Nothing was said about hard times or what they are without; they only talked about what they have together and how grateful they are to have all of these children in their lives. I know how much money they are making, and it ain't much. But they love each other, they are grateful to us and to God.

We all have heard it time and again: remember the reason for the season. Christmas didn't happen around a table of standing rib roasts & carefully cured hams or around an ornately decorated tree with heaps of presents. It happened in the humblest of places--a manger (a cave! as we learned from Whitney last year)--and to a woman who could have easily been outcast on account of her seemingly illegitimate pregnancy. What came out of that place was the greatest gift the world has ever known: a man who only knew love and gave his life so we could live it and follow his way.

This Christmas, if you have friends and family over for dinner and end up with unexpected guests or guests who get snowed in, stop yourself before you worry about extra place settings and having enough food. Think of the family we have helped this year and embrace the love you feel in the room. Pull up a chair, share off your plate if you have to, and make it work. Who cares as long as you are in the company of the ones you love and hold dear? Most of us have everything we need; we only feel lacking when we don't get what we want. It's good to take a moment to acknowledge the difference, and I found that difference in the hearts of this couple and their many children. I pray that we can all experience peace and love in our hearts and that we all can recognize that we are where we need to be for now.

Thank you, again, for sharing your gifts of time and love and money (and Clare's gifts of miles of ribbons & paper!). This ends the first chapter of OOCAP.

We have enough money to help the family in the future, but for now, I think that welcoming them into our church will be our next chapter. The dad is taking the family to one of the Christmas Eve services at St. James's, and he is really excited to come back to a church that he once called home. I hope that we will welcome them with open arms and joyful hearts and with love that transcends boundaries of yours, mine, with and without.

Looking for a Ministry Opportunity on Sunday Mornings?

Our Growing in Faith Sunday school classes for elementary aged kids needs parishioners to teach 3 week long classes in our various rotations. For those of you who aren’t familiar, these kids learn 6 scriptural stories each year in what are called “rotations”. Each rotation is 3-5 weeks. Within those rotations, kids go to different “workshops” to learn the lesson in different ways – art, cooking, science just to name a few. Teachers teach the same lesson for 3 weeks (no matter how long the rotation is) – just to different groups of kids each week. It is a way to teach lessons in an area you are interested in and also to meet a lot of our great kids at St. James’s.

We still have great need throughout the year. Below is the need we currently have for each rotation – including dates, grades and workshops. If you could take a look and see where you might be available and willing, it would be most appreciated. Feel free to e-mail Kent (me) at kentduffey@doers.org with any questions.

Just an FYI that our own Eleanor Rouse will be leading the adult program at the upcoming trip to Emerald Isle, June 17-20, which will make it that much more fun!

For those of you who haven't been, this weekend is lots of fun. From relaxing with friends, time for reflection and prayer, sitting in the rocking chairs with a good drink to sip. A number of WWW ladies are going, and Anita says there is room for more! Check out the website - this place is really beautiful!

Trinity Center Beach Weekend * June 17-20, 2010

“A Lasting Retreat: Peace, Nature, Friendship”

Always a fun and reflective long weekend for singles, families, younger, older, newcomers or long-time members – participants in this retreat have time for running in the waves, sitting on the beach, building sand castles, reading books, nature walks, intelligent conversations, cocktails on the deck, taking naps, getting to know fellow St. Jamesers, and opportunities to learn a little something about God.

Rather than simply visiting this sacred place for a weekend and then leaving it behind, we’ll practice integrating the peace, friendship and spirituality we find inside ourselves. With our whole being we’ll explore and celebrate the sacred in nature and take it home with us when we go.

The long weekend includes accommodations Thursday – Sunday, with all meals Friday breakfast through Sunday lunch. A graduate of Northwestern University, Eleanor has trained in presence-based leadership, women's personal growth, and contemplative spiritual practice. Through coaching and facilitation, Eleanor empowers her clients to deepen their connection to themselves and God. She has created workshops for WomanKind 2010, the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, St. Michael’s Job Assistance Ministry, and Floricane Consulting’s “Next Steps” Program. Eleanor recently led a six-week Women’s Circle on Embodied Spirituality at St. James’s Episcopal Church. She also coaches teenage girls from Richmond’s low income neighborhoods to create social change.

Beth Ahabah Sisterhood is hosting a final event of the year -- Under the Tent

This is an evening dedicated to learning about ourselves and our community through seeing what is similar and how we are more alike than different.

Beth Ahabah is joining together with St. James and the Islamic Center to host an informative and entertaining program. Representatives from these three venerable organizations will provide us with information regarding the role of a woman as seen through religious text, then discuss how practice varies from text. Discussion will include areas of similarity and a women's role in religion and religious practice. We will conclude the program with a sharing of delicious treats from each of our traditions.

This Wine, Women, and Wonder will be a little different from the others.
We'll use most of the night to celebrate the blessing of Carrie's new house. This ceremony dates back to the earliest days of Christianity, when the church began blessing homes to protect residents from evil spirits. Today, we know it as a way to celebrate the presence of God in daily life and acknowledges that all we do is sacramental.

We'll start promptly at 7 p.m., so plese try to be on time.

Advent Retreat!

Join the ladies of Wine, Women and Wonder for a woodland advent retreat, Friday, December 4.

Christine Peterson has graciously opened her Charlottesville-area home to us for an overnight event. Whitney will lead Bible study and a Eucharist, and there will be an abundance of good food, good company, and good wine.

Don't forget your sleeping bag, pillow, Bible, and a bottle of wine to share! Each person will be asked to give $10-$15 to go toward meals. We'll also be looking for volunteers to help prepare meals, so please let Christine (christine_peterson@yahoo.com) and Rachel (rahk77@yahoo.com) know if you can help.

We will carpool together, with as many people leaving Richmond at 5:00 p.m. as possible. Other carpools will be organized for later arrival times. Expect to be back in Richmond by lunch time on Saturday.

Per our very cool discussion the other night, I just ran across the following about the Kingdom of Heaven in a book called "Putting on the Mind of Christ" by Jim Marion.

Not sure if this is ok to send out to the group outside of a meeting (please let me know if it is not!) but I thought you might be interested in this interpretation...

"By the Kingdom of Heaven, Jesus meant a particular level of consciousness, not a place to which Christians are destined after death... Using Mother Teresa and Jesus as examples, we can see that the two chief characteristics of the dual consciousness of the Kingdom of Heaven are a lack of separation between God and humans and a lack of separation between human beings."
